I plied Ydris - the candle person - for more information. Turns out that a lot of us were already being pulled in by this weird world we're in, this summoning is just making that more controlled and bringing everyone into one area to hear them out about their request.

I don't feel especially better about that, but it does change my impression of their actions, if true.
