[OOC] Myddvai Fashion Show

Myddvai Fashion Show
Full Navigation
Hello to all potential players! As the TDM draws closer, we wanted to give everybody another taste of the world of Myddvai. Below are various fashion examples for different breeds, set over the example characters!
These are not exclusively what each breed wears, but a broad sense of their various styles. This page is open to players to chat about their upcoming breed choices, consider character fashion in game, and ask questions specific to clothing. (More general questions about lore, culture, etc. should go to the FAQ! The FAQ is always open for players and potential players to inquire about the world.)
We'll continue to use this post as a resource on all things fashion in this world, moving forward. Hope you enjoy!
Available Choices
HUMANS

Fashion Notes: Springtide humans dress notoriously modest. "Fantasy Victorian" is a good way to think of their fashion sense. It is seen as scandalous for Springtide to show bare skin, though they make some exception for necklines and arms. All Springtide wear gloves in public and often still in private. They have a cultural belief that the soul is held in a person's hands. Showing or touching bare hands is considered more intimate than sex. They are notably uncomfortable with visitors who do not follow this tradition while in Springtide cities. Traveling merchants often oblige in wearing gloves in order to do business with the Springtide.
The Sunderroot humans of the Above Lands are much less strict in their clothing choices. Most simply dress for the work they do, more for functionality than for modesty. As Sunderroot they are often shepherds, blacksmiths, or paladins. Cloth, leather, armor, and furs are all fair game. Given that most breeds in the Above World do not have feet, shoes and socks are notoriously difficult to come by. These are often imported up from the Springtide, as a result. Being a cobbler in the Above World simply isn't all that lucrative.
GIANTS

Fashion Notes: Giants have a wide variety of fashion they enjoy. However, they won't wear leathers, hides, or furs. Wearing the skin of similar creatures to themselves instinctually bothers the majority of Giants. What they most covet is the wool or cut hair of their fellow Giants, which is often knit into clothing for loved ones. Fabrics such as cotton or silks are also common for Giants.
Woven straw hats with room for their crowns to poke through, adored with feathers and wheat are a classic fashion choice. They'll often braid their manes and tails with colorful ribbons and fresh flowers.
In all Myddvai cultures, braided hair is supposed to be done by a loved one, as Arthur and Ygrayne braid one another's hair as a show of familiar love. Even the Springtide abide by this, despite being banished by both deity figures.
ELVES

Fashion Notes: Elves have a wide variety of clothing choices, largely based on which Kingdom they are from. A dark marshland, a sweltering desert, and a snowy mesa make up the three Elven Kingdoms. The capital city in each of these Kingdoms are connected by Fae Gates, which connect many distant places on Myddvai. As a result, most Elves have a dedicated wardrobe for each place, so they are always ready to go on a visit to another Kingdom.
Garden Elves prefer fabric based clothing, as like Giants, most are prey animals that dislike wearing skins. Night Elves will indulge in wearing leathers and furs.
Unlike with Rahuth, Elven magic allows fabrics to shift along with growth or shrinking. This only works on fabrics grown from plants, like cotton or straw weaves, or on animal hair and skins. For this reason, Elven clothing often has buttons carved from wood. Metals will not shift with the magic. Elves who have pierced or gauged their ears for jewelry will (with plenty of theatrics to the gesture) remove their earrings before shifting in either direction.
For unknown reasons, the elves are able to use their magic on Empyreans, despite their metal frames and dust bodies. There is also a rare metal called rose gold they can shift, but it is highly coveted by the Fae who do not give it away easily.
MERMAIDS

Fashion Notes: Mermaid culture is always chasing trends. It is exceedingly common for Mermaids to have a vast wardrobe they hide in treasure troves on land, to try and protect their clothing from the wear of the ocean. Fabric on Myddvai can be fortified with magical dyes to resist water, but salt tends to eat through most of these with enough exposure. As a result, mermaids will continually look for new clothing, as old fashion trends die out or cycle back in to fashion. Having a variety of eye coverings to match different outfits is also commonplace.
Bones, shells, sea glass, and pearls are often used in mermaid jewelry and adornments. They are also very partial to flowing and shear fabrics that move easily in the water.
Most mermaids do not own nor wear shoes, despite their ability to take a land form with legs. Myddvai has a vast system of waterways and cities are made with mermaids in mind, often built on or close to water. Most mermaids will never need to linger on land long enough to take their more human form, let alone protect their feet.
RAHUTH

Fashion Notes: Rahuth plan their fashion around one thought; will they be transforming in this outfit? The magic that Rahuth transform with does not take clothing with it. So, most will throw their clothing off before shifting forms, to avoid tearing it. Loose robes, capes, and ponchos are often worn and rarely layered up.
Rahuth wear skulls, teeth, bones, skins, feathers, and/or fur... but only of other Rahuth. These remains are trophy displays of honor, meaning the wearer was the one who killed the other Rahuth in a duel.
EMPYREANS

Fashion Notes: As Empyreans have no memory of their home, they simply wear what they see fit of Myddvai's various fashion choices. As their bodies are made of stardust, they can simply shift into clothing as they please. This removes any need for practical fastens and they can fit their bodies into basically any shape.
Most Empyreans do not like metals to be part of their clothing, as they can feel irritating within their magnetic field.
We'll continue to update this page as a reference as the game moves forward!
